Some rich Khmer folks out there.
They were fortunate to obtain some valuable domain names back in the 90s, which are now worth tens of thousands & some in the millions. If I was a rich business man in Cambodia, or here, I would try to obtain that domain in a heart beat. :)

Since Khmer Portal was already replaced by the forums, I wonder what the new portal will turn out to be.

The portal will continue to focus on Cambodian American and through out. We would like to have breaking news, posted events & "bon", obituaries, help & donation for victims, e.g., and many community related things.

I honestly regret never majoring in computers. At the time, computers were new to me too.

Thank you! Khmer.com or Cambodia.com would have been the ultimate domain but one of them is being sold for at least $300k!

Just out of curiosity, can't Khmer.net or Cambodia.net work too? I mean, if that's the name that interests you most.

@ Hunnie

I think those domains (.org, .net, .com, .edu) all serve their own purpose. Edu is for colleges and universities and .com are for commerce? Not an expert, note. Really, I second that question though. Why not .net domain?

Originally, it was suggested that .COM be used primarily for commercial businesses, .NET for network related organizations and .ORG for nonprofit groups. Not sure what the new update on it is, but my boyfriend comment on why not use .net if that's the highly wanted name?

If it's not already in used of course. :)

Like I mentioned earlier in my post, you raise a very good question and one I look forward to hearing a response from either admin or rei or rock......The trifecta of tech. Does it really matter, if its .com or .net? I mean, will the internet explode into cyber pieces if someone actually tried that? Getting a domain wrong. Honestly, I like .com better cause .net seems so "Apple."

I know that some people use the .com and .net to spam people with the same domain name by just changing the .something around. One major spam is FASA. If you go to FASA.com, you will be paying for your financial aid service. It has to be .ed.gov for free service. They said it's not a spam since FASA.com will complete your aid request, but with a fee when you can get it done for free with .gov

Now why would you want to pay for something that can be free?

http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/fafsa-com-not-ed-gov-did-i-get-scammed.htm

Anyhow, if visitor put the domain name and accidently go to our .net site, it's like getting visitor from the other site without much advertising because they click on the wrong .something

But like you said, our tech people will have to educate us on that. :)
I'm just a curious girl. Love to hear their input.

Good question, Hunnie. In simple answer, the internet is a dot com world. Statistically and naturally, people tend to think of dot com as the extension to most websites. Therefore, it has become part of branding & marketing for business owners. Even smartphone keyboard layouts include a visible dot com button first (until you hold down for other extensions).

You brought a great example of FAFSA.gov. Most people would mistakenly visit FAFSA.com because of what stated above & in much greater traffic volume than FAFSA.net. The best solution is to own all top level domains (.com, .net, .info, .org, e.g.) for your business.

I would not mind running a business under Khmer.net as an alternate choice, although it will require more marketing effort than the dot com version. :)

Thanks for educating me a little more bong. All very useful information for me in the long run. Those bits and pieces helps make my understanding a whole lot better. :)
